Obituary


Gerald E. Kintzi, 88, of Belmond passed away on Sunday, August 25, 2024 at his home.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM on Friday, August 30, 2024 at Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane South in Belmond. Burial will take place in St. James, Minnesota.

Gerald Edward, son of Eldor and Elsie (Froehling) Kintzi, was born on April 2, 1936 in St. James, Minnesota. Gerry grew up and attended school in St. James. Gerry was a highly decorated high school athlete in football, basketball, baseball and tennis, lettering a total of 16 times. He was an integral part of the 1953 state football championship team. He also won the state championship in tennis. In 2013, he was inducted into the inaugural class of the St. James High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Following high school, Gerry went on to the University of Minnesota on a football scholarship and played football as a Minnesota Gopher for a year before attending Mankato State Teacher’s College where he received his teaching degree and later his masters.

Gerry was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Joan Asendorf, on September 14, 1954 in St. James. Gerry took his first teaching job in Sheffield, IA, in 1958, and in 1959, they moved to Belmond where Gerry taught for 39 years. In addition to teaching, Gerry was athletic director and coached wrestling and football. He was proud to have coached four students that went on to play professional football. Gerry received a Service to Athletes Award in 1999 from the Iowa High School Athletic Association and was inducted into the Iowa Athletic Director’s Hall of Fame in 2001.

In his younger years, Gerry enjoyed hunting and fishing. Gerry and Jo enjoyed going on fishing trips with their family and friends over the years. Later in life, Gerry enjoyed carving and painting wooden birds.

Gerry is survived by his daughter Kris (Paul) Rogalla of Indianola; son Ron (Audrey) Kintzi of Rosemount, Minnesota; grandchildren Ryan (Molly) Rogalla and their children Joanna and Ben, Brandon (Amy) Rogalla and their children Lauren, Olivia, Wyatt, and Walker, Amanda (Michaela) Kintzi-Neisen, and Nate Kintzi (Rachel Kleinertz); sister Eldoris Bunnell; sister-in-law Kathy Asendorf; nieces and nephews Pat (Jerry) Kelly, Bobbie (Jim) Senske, Lori (Greg) Wiley, Brad (Shawna) Asendorf, Jody (Jim) Arndt, Brian (Tara) Asendorf; and many extended family members.

He is preceded in death by his wife Jo Kintzi; parents Eldor and Elsie Kintzi; brother-in-law Don Bunnell; and in-laws Ben and Edith Asendorf.
