Mabel Helene, the daughter of George and Emma (Schlafke) Boyd was born August 9, 1924 in Story City, Iowa. She was raised and educated in Story City, along with her 6 siblings.
Following high school, Mabel worked at the Des Moines Ordnance Plant during the Second World War.
In November of 1945, Mabel was united in marriage to Merle Wayne Obrecht. The family made their home in Belmond, where they raised their children, Sandy, Gary, Rosie and Paula. Merle passed away in 1967.
In September of 1970, Mabel married Erwin “Jack” Schroder, and adopted his children, Tom, Philip, Shelly and Richard. The blended family made their home in rural Rowan and later, the couple moved to Dows. Jack passed away in 1993.
Mabel remained in Dows for a couple of years before moving to Charles City, her home until moving to Eagle Grove in 2015.
Mabel worked a number of years as a cook, at the Townhouse Café in Belmond, the Belmond nursing home, and at Chapman’s Café in Belmond. She was famous for her caramel rolls and her French dressing recipe, which she kept closely guarded. Later, she began making Kringla, mostly to give away to family and friends.
Mabel enjoyed traveling; she and Jack visited a number of states and spent more than 20 winters in Texas. She was very artistically inclined, she loved drawing, painting and etching. Again, it brought her great joy giving away her art so it could be enjoyed by her family and friends. She was an accomplished seamstress, did alterations, made clothing for her children and later, for her grandchildren’s dolls, and even sewed the costumes for the Belmond High School baton twirlers. Over the years, she kept extensive flower and vegetable gardens, canned her produce and raised a variety of ornamental flowers and trees.
Mabel was a lifelong Lutheran, was formerly a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond and First Lutheran Church in Dows.
Mabel will be lovingly remembered by her family for her generous and giving nature, her unconditional love for her family and for her beautiful sense of humor.
Mabel is survived by her children, Sandra Grimm of Talihina, Oklahoma, Gary (Angie) Obrecht of Webster City, Rosie (Al) Darland of Eagle Grove, Paula (Mike) Molstead of Charles City, Philip Schroder of Boone, and Richard (Susan) Schroder of Mason City; daughter-in-law Judy Schroder of Clarion; grandchildren, Tom E.
