Obituary
Randall J. Banning, 68, of Belmond, passed away on Monday, January 27, 2025 at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City.
A memorial visitation will be held from 10:00-11:30 AM on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at the Leinbach Community Center, 116 Luick’s Lane North in Belmond. Military honors will be conducted at 11:30 AM at the Leinbach Center by the Belmond Honor Guard. Private graveside services will be held at a later date.
Memorials can be made to the Friends of the Belmond Public Library or to the Belmond-Klemme Scholarship Foundation II.
Randall James, son of Gerald “Ed” and Eunice (Mehl) Banning, was born on March 24, 1956. He grew up in Belmond, living in Texas for a short while. Randy graduated from Belmond High School in 1975.
Following high school, Randy attended Waldorf College in Forest City. He then joined the United States Navy. He served for 4 years and was stationed in Guam. After being honorably discharged, Randy returned to Mississippi, where he worked for Marshall Durbin Co. He later returned to Iowa and worked at Winnebago Industries for many years until retirement.
Randy was an avid golfer. He spent many hours on the golf course and was involved with the Belmond Country Club over the years. He loved to visit the library and especially enjoyed reading old west and military history. He loved sports and was a huge fan of the Texas Longhorns. He was a proud Belmond High School alumni and passionately followed their sports activities.
In 2021, Randy reconnected with Eleanor Abadajos, who he first met 40+ years ago while they were both serving in Guam. They enjoyed traveling together and going back and forth between California and Iowa to spend time together.
Randy is survived by his mother Eunice Banning of Belmond; sister Jana Brown of Mississippi; niece and nephew Andy Brown and Ashley Gray; Uncle Ray Mehl, many cousins; and special friend Eleanor Abadajos.
He was preceded in death by his father Ed Banning; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
