Shirley A. Schmidt

Shirley A. Schmidt, 93, of Belmond, formerly of Alexander passed peacefully on Monday, April 24, 2023 at her home in Belmond. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 28, 2023 at Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane South in Belmond. Burial will be in the Alexander Cemetery. Shirley Ann (Fekkers) Schmidt was born in Belmond, Iowa uon February 25, 1930 to Reuben and Katherine (Yakel) Fekkers.  She attended Meservey Consolidated School and graduated with the class of 1947.

She married Walter George Schmidt of Alexander, Iowa on January 21, 1949.  They had two children, Linda and Michael.  They farmed in the Alexander area.  She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Alexander.

Shirley was a friend to everyone and deeply devoted to her family.  She was an avid reader and card player.  She will be missed for her kind heart and beautiful smile.

Shirley is survived by her daughter Linda (Keith) Sheriff of West Des Moines; son Michael of Hawaii; four grandchildren Philip (Krista) Sheriff, Brian (Marcia) Sheriff, Erin (Heather) Sheriff and Steven (Jenny) Sheriff; 14 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; a sister Phyllis (Merlin) Ruiter; a half-sister Barbara Moore along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Walter in 1986, a half-brother Walter Fekkers in 1985 and step-father Jacob E. Pals.
