Obituary


Ardell I. Van Osten, 85, of Meservey, passed away Sunday, December 17, 2023 at Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at Meservey Cemetery in Meservey with Rev. Rodney Meester officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM on Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane South in Belmond.

Ardell Ivan VanOsten, the son of John and Dena (Beek) Van Osten, was born on July 21, 1938 in Belmond, Iowa.  He graduated from Meservey High School with the Class of 1956.

After high school, Ardell enlisted in the United States Army Reserves in 1960 and dutifully served until 1966 when he was honorably discharged.

He was united in marriage to Linda Proctor on September 21, 1963 at the Richland Lutheran Church in Thornton.  This year they happily celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. The couple raised their family in Meservey, where Ardell worked at the Meservey Co-op and Farm Service of Thornton.  He retired in 2001.

In his free time, Ardell enjoyed trips to the casino, spending time with his beloved cat, Sophie but most of all enjoyed spending time with his family. He volunteered as a Meservey Town Council Member and served as a Deacon for many terms at the Meservey Reformed Church where he was a faithful member.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife Linda Van Osten of Meservey; daughters Robin Van Osten of Urbandale, Iowa, and Sandra Van Osten of Des Moines, Iowa; sister Judy (Mike) Miller; brothers-in-law Marvin (Jane) Proctor and Duane (Jewell) Proctor; sister-in-law Shirley Proctor along with many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; mother and father-in-law, Thomas and Laurine Proctor; and brother-in-law Marty Proctor.
