Condolences
Dave was a customer and friend. We often talked about fishing more than work related things. I admired him a lot for his enthusiasm for the outdoors.

Dave was a huge part of my childhood growing up. From staying overnight, camping trips in Decorah, and just having me over for his infamous beef n noodles, Dave was like a second father. He was a great human being, a great father to his kids, and was always so good to me. I have so many childhood memories thanks to him. He helped me tremendously with my different roles within the city. I am thankful to know such a great human being. My condolences to your family.

David was always such a central member of the Paul and Pat Spangler family — right in the midst of his four sisters! Poor guy, surrounded by all those girls, and yet it seemed to make him all the more warm, kind, and embracing. I have such fond memories of spending time with David during those summers in Iowa when I was young and then reconnecting many years later on my family's first camping trip to Decorah. His passion for camping, cooking, and kayaking was contagious, and he made the whole experience such a joy for all of us — even though we didn’t have one of those beautiful Winnebagos, just our humble little setup that we proudly dubbed the “Happy Camper.” What struck me most was how effortlessly David — and Julie, too — made us feel like family, even after so many years apart. It was as if no time had passed, and as if he had always known my husband and son. That kind of warmth and generosity of spirit is rare, and I’m so grateful for the moments we shared. David, I will miss you deeply — especially now, just as we were re-entering each other’s lives as adult cousins. With love and sympathy, Debbie (Spangler) Barbanel, Alan Barbanel and Tristan Barbanel

Dave was a devoted husband & father. He dearly loved spending time with his family. His children and grandchildren have so many lasting memories of camping adventures with him & Julie. He was so kind & giving. He was a hard worker who set a great example for his children. His family & friends are fortunate to be in his circle of generosity. We were blessed to know him as co-grandparents to 3 of his granddaughters. He’s their Angel now.

When I started with the City I was unaware of how much was involved. Dave did not have to answer questions or help me at all, but he was always very good to me any time I talked with him. The knowledge he shared with me was very helpful. I did not know Dave for a long time, but I considered him to be a good friend and I will miss our conversations.

Dear Julie & family, I am so sorry to read this!! We spent so many years raising our kids together. May God rap His everlasting arms around you and uphold you… until we meet our loved one again one day. Love & blessings, Pastor Matt Miller, retired & widower.

Dave was as kind and personable as anyone I've had the pleasure of meeting. I'll never forget passing through Pulpit Rock campground in Decorah on a work trip and seeing Dave & Julie, at which time we were immediately offered a beverage and something to eat, a place to sit and talk before a long drive home. All our love to the entire Spangler family - he was so fortunate to have all of you, and of course you him as well. We are here for you. Rest easy Dave.
