Obituary


Gary C. Nagell, 80, of Jewell, passed away on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at his home in Jewell.

Graveside services for Gary Nagell will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell with Deacon Dr. Michael Whitters officiating.

Visitation for Gary Nagell will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday, May 17, 2024, at Ewing Funeral Home, 1801 Central Avenue East, in Clarion.

Gary Charles Nagell, the son of Charles Arthur and Opal Frances (Blegen) Nagell, was born on October 13, 1943 in Boone, Iowa. Gary grew up in the Jewell area, graduating from South Hamilton High School.

Following graduation, Gary served with the United States Marine Corps.  He was honorably discharged.

On January 29, 1972, Gary was united in marriage to Arleen Lopeman in Ames. The couple was blessed with two daughters, Arleen and Kammy.  They made their home in Jewell, and Arleen passed away in 2020.

Gary loved motorcycles, drag racing, weightlifting, and his 1967 pink Chevrolet Impala.  He enjoyed singing, and was the lead singer of the Surfinks, who were inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.  He also enjoyed riding his bicycle, racking up 6628 miles in 2012.  

Gary is survived by his daughters, Arleen (Eddie) Mullenax, of Clarion and Kammy (Curt) Nelson, of Clarion; grandchildren: Trent (Andrea) Boles, Samantha (Cody) Edelen, Amanda (Daniel) Hewko, Josephine (William) Miller, Kaylynn Nelson and Skyler Nelson; five great-grandchildren, along with another on the way; twin brothers Bruce and Blake Finstad; aunt Ollie Parker; along with numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Arleen, and his sister, Charlene Jacobsen.
