He was baptized and a lifelong member of the United Church of Christ (Congregational) in Belmond. He served on about all the boards of the church. He enjoyed being a trustee and helping with small jobs around the church. He graduated from Belmond High School. He worked on the family farm for a couple years and then joined the US Navy and served during the Korean Conflict in the Pacific area for about four years. He furthered his education at the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. He graduated from the Post Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

He married Imogene F. Halfpap on July 18, 1952, in San Diego, CA, before being stationed in Hawaii. They celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary in 2024. After his service career, he joined the staff at the First State Bank and was an active employee for nearly 40 years. He enjoyed seeing people prosper and be successful.
