George Boyington was born on April 21, 1941, to Wesley and Edna Boyington in Clarion, Iowa, the second of six children. Over the course of his life, George was many things to many people. In particular, though, George was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.

In 1963, George married Sally Filble, and they raised a family on a farm southeast of Clarion. They had three daughters: Diane, Deborah, and Susan. As a father, George instilled in his girls the values of hard work, good humor, and service. He also shared his love of land and animals—especially horses—with his family, nurturing a deep appreciation for and connection to agriculture in his children and grandchildren.

Spending most of his life in Clarion, George faithfully served his community for as long as he could. George developed leadership skills as a young man by serving in numerous positions with the local 4-H program and at Rowan High School (Class of 1959). Born to be a farmer, George’s commitment to agriculture and community service was recognized in 1974 when he received the Jaycee’s Outstanding Young Farmer Award. George was also active in the Clarion United Methodist Church, served as a 4-H Leader, sat on the Clarion Co-op board for nine years, and participated in the Clarion Buckaroos Saddle Club, Cyrene Lodge No. 325 A.F. & A.M., Adah Chapter No. 136, Ruritans, and El Kahir Shriners. After retiring from farming in 2003, he dedicated his time and talents to the Heartland Museum, working to preserve and celebrate the town’s history as a board member, president, and volunteer.

George loved his family fiercely and had a great sense of humor. He was quick to grin and had a sharp wit. George was also abundantly generous and always willing to help. His family will forever remember the many ways he showed up with practical support during some of their most difficult moments. A skilled carpenter, he crafted walnut bedroom sets, roll-top desks for his daughters, and various other cherished projects. He adored his grandchildren and recently met his first great-grandson.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Sally Boyington, and daughters Diane (Bruce) Maxwell, Debbie (Tom) Ewing, and Susan Plank. Grandchildren: Chelsea Maxwell, Kevin Maxwell, Ryan Ewing, Amy Ewing, Zac Plank, and Brennan Plank. Great-grandchild Ledger Ewing. Siblings: Arlene Boyington, Ardeth (Paul) Rietz, Vicky (Morris) Wilson, Jim (Kathy) Boyington, Jerry (Tana) Boyington, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Edna Boyington, and son-in-law Andy Plank.

Memorial contributions can be made to Shriners Hospital Burn Unit and Bethany Life.
