Obituary

Grace (Meints) Haugen, 94, of Marshalltown, formerly of Dows,  passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025 at Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at First Lutheran Church, 206 West Ellsworth Street in Dows. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Dows.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane South in Belmond.

“I was born on a farm east of Belmond on October 31, 1930.  When I was four or five, my dad quit farming and moved us into Belmond.  He ran the Phillips 66 gas station for 38 years.

I went to grade school and high school in Belmond.  I graduated from high school in Belmond in 1948.

I met my husband, Harold Haugen of Belmond, formerly of Makoti, North Dakota.  We were married on January 9, 1949, and moved to a farm north and west of Alexander.  After 10 years we moved to a farm near Dows.  We lived and farmed there for 33 years.

Six children were born to this marriage: Wendy Killius of Chandler, Arizona, Ila Haugen of Ames, John Haugen of Dows, Jim (Mary) Haugen of Dows, Laura (Barry Manz) Haugen of Marshalltown and Joe (Lanie) Haugen of Dows.

After Harold passed away, I moved into an apartment in Dows.  I lived there for 18 years.  Then I moved to a house on a neighboring farm.  I then moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown in January 2024.” (Written by Grace)

Grace was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Dows and enjoyed being a part of the sewing group there and at the Presbyterian Church.  She enjoyed quilting, music (especially Elvis), jigsaw puzzles, gardening and spent many summers at our cabin in Orr, Minnesota.  Grace kept a better home than Martha Stewart and filled it with warmth, love and food.  She always welcomed all her children’s friends into our home, fed them well and cheered them on in whatever games they played (tag team wrestling anyone?).  With six children of her own, she never gave a second thought to expanding the dining room table to feed a dozen friends and family.

Grace is survived by her six children; two daughters-in-law; one son-in-law; six grandchildren, Ezra Kopsa, Anthoneih Kopsa, Ashley (Ben) Krause, Ty (Michellynn) Haugen, Julie (Jake) Keppy, Jamie (Paul) Nahnsen; six great-grandchildren, Ezra Kopsa, Jr., Leo Kopsa, Stetson Keppy, Tessley Keppy, Rhettley Nahnsen, Cael Nahnsen; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, husband Harold, all of her siblings, all of her brothers and sisters-in-law, one son-in-law Scott Killius, and several nieces and nephews.
