Hemmo Edward John, son of George and Hannah (Einhuis) Eekhoff, was born on March 17, 1939, on the family farm near Belmond. He graduated from Belmond High School in 1957.
On September 4, 1964, Hemmo was united in marriage to Marlene Peterson in Forest City. The couple made their home just half a mile from the Eekhoff home place, eventually moving back to the home farm where Hemmo had been raised.
Hemmo was a lifelong farmer, devoted to his land and his Hereford cattle. He took great pride in farming and was happiest when he was busy on the farm. Hemmo was a lifelong member of Calvary Baptist Church in Belmond, where he faithfully served as a deacon and an usher.
In his later years, Hemmo enjoyed watching sports—especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Vikings—and comedy shows on television. Above all, he loved his family. He cherished time spent with his granddaughter and his great-grandson.
Hemmo is survived by his two sons Larry Eekhoff and Tim (Jeannie) Eekhoff; granddaughter Stephanie Niehmeyer; great-grandson Gabriel; sister Hannah Mack; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marlene in 2010; parents George and Hannah Eekhoff; brothers George and Jake; sisters Marie, Em, and Cindy.
