James Friedrich Harle was born on August 24, 1939, at home in rural Kanawha, Iowa, to Ingmar and Mary (Hughes) Harle. He was the oldest of four children. Jim graduated from Kanawha Community School in 1957. After high school, he worked for area farmers until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1962, during which time he was stationed in Korea for nine months. In 1964 he returned home to farm with his dad and brother. He continued to serve in the Army Reserves for another two years. In 1967 he married Jackie Shipman. Although they later divorced, they shared six children, eighteen grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, whom they were able to enjoy together. Over the years, Jim proudly served on his local elevator, ASC, and school boards. He enjoyed the friendships he made while serving on these boards as well as at the various part-time jobs he had throughout the years. Jim truly loved farming. He also enjoyed fishing with friends and family. Above all he loved spending time with his kids and grandkids. He could often be found tinkering on old snowmobiles, motorcycles, tractors, etc. for their entertainment around the farm. He took great pleasure in teaching them how to drive and about farming. The grandkids loved visiting Grandpa's/Papa's farm. Left to cherish Jim's memory are his children Ken (Anita) Harle of Goldfield, Iowa, Tony (Mona) Harle of Garner, Iowa, Dacia Schoning of Sheffield, Iowa, Jon (Megan Telford) Harle of Kanawha,  Iowa, Detra Harle of Lone Rock, Iowa, and Darla (Dan) Small of Urbana, Iowa; grandchildren Chris (Megan Beisch) Imbus, James, Chase, and Kenley Harle, Payton Harle, Collin, Stephen, and Abby Schoning, Sydney Zamago, Quinn, Caeden, and Kearsyn Harle, Thaide and Faith Landolt, Jenna, Danny, Gabe, and Jak Small; great-grandaughter Morgan Imbus; siblings Linda (Joe) Weir of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Rich (Devon) Harle of Winona, Minnesota, and sister-in-law Bonita Harle of Kanawha, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents and his brother, Bob Harle.
