Obituary
Janice L. Johnson, 90, of Kanawha, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Kanawha Community Home.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at Kanawha Lutheran Church, 125 West Fourth Street, in Kanawha with Pastor Jason Semans officiating. Private graveside will be held at Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at Ewing Funeral Home, 178 Center Street West in Britt.
Janice Loyce Hughes was born to Amos and Violetta (Henschen) Hughes on May 24, 1934, on a farm near Kanawha, Iowa. She graduated from Kanawha High School in 1951. In the fall of 1952 she traveled by train to Hempstead, New York, where she was united in marriage to Dudley Johnson on October 7. Dudley was serving there in the U.S. Air Force. After his father died the next May the couple returned to Kanawha to farm. Dudley and Janice had four children; Belinda, Terry, Scott, and Kurt. Janice was a good cook. Her jars of pickles would bring record prices at Kanawha Lutheran auctions. Family favorites were her cinnamon rolls, chocolate angel food dessert, and ice cream roll. Janice was a cook at the Kanawha Community Home when her mother was a resident there. Dudley died on June 12, 2014. Janice was the last surviving member of the nine Johnson siblings and their spouses.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
She is survived by her children, Belinda (Dennis) Holbrook of Davenport, Terry (Paula) Johnson of Kanawha, Scott (Laura) Johnson of Belmond, and Kurt (Michelle) Johnson of Adel, nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, sister, Ina Mayland of Kanawha, and brother, Howard (Betty) of Humboldt.
