John Henry, son of Raymond and Edna (Rife) Meyers, was born on May 25, 1937 in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. John was one of 10 children. He grew up in Pennsylvania until he was 13. He moved to Iowa to help his brothers on the farm for a short while before returning to Pennsylvania to help at home until he was 16. At 16 years old, John moved to Iowa. John enlisted in the Army National Guard. He served for 8 years before being honorably discharged as Staff Sargent.
On May 28, 1961, John was united in marriage to Catherine Wright. They made their home in Dallas Center where John worked for a local farmer for several years before moving to Dows where he worked for a local farmer and then on his own farm there. They eventually moved to Charles City raising hogs for a few years then moved back to the Dows area. He continued farming and working for local elevators until his retirement.
Over the years, John and Catherine enjoyed going to dances where they’d dance to old country music. After John retired, he enjoyed helping others with handyman projects. The last project he worked on was a house built in the 1900s in Dows. John was happiest when he was working! He enjoyed being with his family and would be right in the action if there was a ball game, volleyball or dominos or card game going on.
John is survived by his wife Catherine Meyers of Dows; 5 children Cynthia (Wade) Childs of Charles City, Raymond Meyers of Dows, Donald (Dawn) Meyers of Webster City, Merry (Dave) Wiedow of West Union, and Julie Meyers (Rod Peterson) of Humboldt; 19 grandchildren Elizabeth (Childs) Schaefer, Isaac Childs, Jeremiah Tacker, Lucas Tacker, Aaron Tacker, Joshua Meyers, Ciara Meyers, Ashley (Meyers) Crandall, Andrew Meyers, Anthony Meyers, Christopher Stover, Scott Stover, Terry Stover, James Claude, Nicole (Claude) Overland, Katie (Claude) Huff, Preston Peterson, Spencer Peterson, and Curtis Peterson; 41 great-grandchildren; brother and sisters-in-law David (Joann) Meyers and Mary Meyers; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 8 siblings and in-laws Reuben (Ruth), Robert (Betty), Janet (John), Roy (Ada), Marty, Dan (Donna), Tom (Doris), and Mildred (Irvin).
