John “Jack” D. Brooks, age 82, of Clarion, Iowa, passed away Friday, July 20, 2007 at the USA Health Care Center in Clarion.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, July 23, 2007 at the Ewing Dugger Helgeson Funeral Home, 602 North Main Street, Clarion, Iowa, 50525, with Pastor Charles J. Carlsen officiating. Inurnment will take place in Graceland Cemetery, Rowan, Iowa. Military Rites will be provided by the Clarion American Legion and VFW.
A visitation will be held from 3-5 PM, Sunday, July 22, 2007 at the Ewing Dugger Helgeson Funeral Home, 602 North Main Street, Clarion, Iowa, 50525, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Monday.
John “Jack” Dale Brooks, son of Edgar and Hazel (Whipple) Brooks, was born on October 19, 1924 at Lake Cornelia, Iowa. He spent his childhood working on the Brooks family farm and attending Plum Grove School, north of Lake Cornelia. In 1942, he graduated from Clarion High School.
After graduation he enlisted in the Army and moved to San Francisco. On March 15, 1943, Jack was united in marriage to Gladys Hansen. That same year, Jack entered active duty and served in WWII until he was honorably discharged in 1946. Three children were born to this union.
The couple moved to Eagle Grove, Iowa where Jack drove a taxi. They then moved to Clarion where he was employed by the Chicago Great Western as a car toad. While working for the Chicago Great Western he built his house on 4th. Street S.W. He then became the shop foreman for the Wright County Maintenance Shop.
Jack enjoyed lawn care, landscaping and was an avid gardener. He also enjoyed fishing in Canada, hunting, playing cards, socializing with friends, watching crops and wildlife, and hunting asparagus.
He was a member of the Holmes Christmas Club, VFW, and the Railroad Union.
Jack is survived by his two sons, Kent (Linda) Brooks of Clarion, and Kirk (Margret) Brooks of Nashville, TN; one daughter, Kay Brooks (Charles Carlsen) of Bellevue, NE; eight grandchildren, Kent (Stephanie) , Nicole (special friend Brian) , Kevin (Shari), Lori (Jon), Melissa (special friend, Dan), Rodney (Shannon), Chris (Fiancé, Michelle) and Dustin (Bridget); nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roger (Sunnie) Brooks, and Alan (Chris) Brooks; three sisters, Betty Robinson, Maxine Benson, and Joan (Dean) Schroeder; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gladys in 1993; three brothers, Robert, Bill, and James; and two sisters, Charlene and Patricia.
