Larry Ehlers

Larry Ehlers, 59, of Clarion, passed away Friday, November 13, 2009 at Wright Medical Center.

Memorial services for Larry Ehlers will be held Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 7:00 P.M. at Ewing Funeral Home in Clarion with Rev. Nils Hernandez and Deacon Dr. Michael Whitters officiating. 

Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 17, 2009 from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at Ewing Funeral Home, 602 North Main in Clarion.  There will be a Masonic service Tuesday evening at the funeral home following the memorial service.

Larry Ehlers was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on July 8, 1950, to Paul and Evelyn (VanFleet) Ehlers.  He attended Cedar Falls High School and graduated in the Class of 1968.  

After high school, Larry enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1968 serving during the Vietnam War. In 1970, Larry was honorably discharged with Sergeant ranking. 

On July 13, 1974, he was united in marriage to Debra Kay Schake, and they made their home in Clarion.  During their marriage of 34 years, two sons were born, Neal and Jon.  

Larry operated D & E Motors for nearly 25 years.  He also worked as a realtor and contractor.

Larry enjoyed fishing, cooking, being outdoors, and spending time with friends and family, especially his granddaughters. He was a certified aircraft mechanic and an avid flyer.

Larry was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Cyrene Lodge 325 in Clarion and was a Mason and a Shriner.  

Larry is survived by his children: Neal Ehlers of Clarion and Jon (Heather) Ehlers of Ames; grandchildren Mackenzie and Mayde; his parents: Paul and Evelyn Ehlers of Cedar Falls; brothers: Wayne  Ehlers of Galt and Mike  Ehlers of Cedar Falls; sister Susie Potts of Janesville, Minnesota; and numerous other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents, and his cat Maynard.
