Joe was born June 18, 1934, near Palmer, Nebraska, to Joseph and Mary (Zuehlke) Ziller. At the age of four, he moved with his family to the farmstead four miles south of Belmond. He would live on that farm for the next 69 years of his life, at which time he and his wife, Mary, moved to town. Joe continued to farm the land alongside his son Steve and grandson Sloan up until a month before his death. Farming was in his blood; it was a profession and lifestyle that he loved and respected deeply. Farming was second only to the true love of his life, Mary Jean (Klatt) whom he married on February 7th of 1959. Their marriage was blessed with five children: Lori, Linda, Jean, Bob and Steve.
Joe graduated in 1952 from Belmond High School. He served in the U.S. Army, attending training at Camp Chaffee in Arkansas and serving in Germany. He was a long-time member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He thoroughly enjoyed watching the grain markets, attending estate sales, playing cards and putting intricate puzzles together in his spare time. He enjoyed bowling and golfing during his life, as well as traveling in his later years, among his favorite travel destinations were New York City, Florida, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Austria and Germany.
Joe is survived by his five children, Lori (Andrew) Watson of Portland, OR., Linda (Jeff) Stewart of Jacksonville, FL., Jean Potthoff of Clive, Robert (Nickie) Ziller of Rochester, MN., and Steve Ziller of Belmond; nine grandchildren, Malaika Watson, Jared, Ryan and Rachel Stewart, Austin Potthoff, Andrew, Matthew and Claire Ziller and Sloan Ziller; three great-grandchildren Charlie Potthoff, Quincy and Cade Ziller; a sister, Evelyn Elthon, a brother, Lew (Jane) Ziller, in-laws Robert (Phyllis) Klatt, Margaret (Jack) Lang, and Sue (Gene) Klatt-Malek; and numerous nieces and nephews.
