He was born to Lawrence and Mary Spencer March 24, 1927. He graduated from Clarion High School and began farming with his father. He served in the army in Korea. He married Ruth Upmeyer and was incredibly proud of their 6 children and the fact that they took in 29 foster children.

He started a steel business which he relocated to Florence, Iowa, serving farmers, small businesses and crafters all over North-central Iowa.

LC came to really know Christ as his Savior, and sharing his faith became the driving force of his life. He loved passing out cards, pencils with no point, and “round tuits.” He bought a school bus, and later a fleet of vans which were used to haul youth groups and Special Olympians to various events. He was generous in ways most will never know.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, brothers Phillip and Marion, and a great grandson Taylor Steinbach. He is survived by 2 sons, Tim (Carmel), Alan (Kim), 4 daughters Maggie (Rick) Bauer, Barb (Mike) Redig, Alice (Brad) Von Seggern, and Sally (Garth) Conley, 20 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family or to MissionGO, where his granddaughter serves in Sierra Leone.
