Obituary


Lyola L. (Pals) Tulp Johnson, 90, of Belmond passed away Saturday, November 17, 2018 at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services for Lyola Tulp Johnson will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Immanuel Reformed Church, 3157 130th Street in Belmond with Pastor Dave DeKuiper officiating. Burial will follow at the Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery.

Visitation for Lyola Tulp Johnson will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday, November 30, 2018 at Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane South in Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday afternoon.

Lyola Louise, the daughter of Dick A. and Grace (Mennenga) Pals, was born November 18, 1927. She was raised on the family farm northeast of Belmond and was educated in country schools and graduated from Belmond High School.

Following high school, Lyola attended Central College in Pella, where she earned a teachers certificate. She taught in a one room school house in rural Belmond for a few years before taking a job as bookkeeper at Helland and Long Implement in Belmond. She later worked as a dietician at the Belmond and Britt hospitals for a number of years before retiring. In her retirement, she volunteered with Lavon Tanner’s 2nd Grade class, working with the students with their reading skills.

Lyola was united in marriage to Howard Tulp in June of 1953. The couple made their home in rural Belmond, raising their four children. She later married Bob Johnson in June of 1998.

Lyola was a lifelong member of the Immanuel Reformed Church in Belmond, where she was active as choir director and pianist for a number of years. She also taught Sunday school and catechism.

Lyola was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary post in Goodell.

Lyola loved square dancing and roller skating in her younger years. She was a very avid gardener and canned much of her produce. She was known as a great cook and baker, and enjoyed sewing and quilting. She and Howard enjoyed traveling, especially trips to Hawaii, the Dominican Republic and Las Vegas.

Lyola is survived by her children, Paula (Terry) Johnson of Kanawha, Harlan (Karen) Tulp of Belmond, Joy (Kurt) Gines of North Logan, Utah and Harvey (June) Tulp of Belmond; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; along with numerous other relatives and friends.

Lyola was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Howard Tulp, her husband Bob Johnson and her sisters Elaine Schmidt and Ruth Groen and brothers-in-law Clarence Schmidt and Herman Groen.
