Millie was born on March 15, 1934 in Clear Lake, the third of nine children born to Harold and Helen (Malone) Smith. Her family moved a number of times, eventually to Belmond in 1950, where she graduated from high school. Millie met Raymond Lowenberg while he was on furlough from the Army. They were married on January 27, 1951.
In 1961, Ray and Millie moved to their home on 8th Street Northeast in Belmond, which Millie specifically designed with her family in mind. Ray and Millie resided there until they moved to Copperwood Assisted Living in Ankeny a few years ago. While raising their five children, Millie also worked outside the home as an engineering draftsman for Rowan and Murray Engineers, a secretary for Bill Johnson’s insurance office, owned their clothing store, Millie’s Fashions, and did bookkeeping at the hospital in Belmond.
Millie enjoyed following the activities of her children and grandchildren, reading, and tending to her outdoor flower gardens. After their retirement, Ray and Millie enjoyed their frequent travels both in States and over seas. They traveled yearly to California to spend time with relatives.
Millie is survived by her five children Cathy (Kent) Korthas, Dan (Nancey) Lowenberg, Doug (Melody) Lowenberg, Dennis (Janyne) Lowenberg, and Pamela Cisco; grandchildren Christopher, Kylie, Kim, Lauren, Spencer, Shane, Jill, and Andrew; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ray Lowenberg in 2024; parents Harold and Helen Smith; siblings Charlotte, Robert, Joan, Dorothy, and Linda; grandson Anthony; and son-in-law Roy Cisco.
