Obituary

Nick Verbrugge, age 90, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 25, 2025.  He had been living at the Summit House in Britt, Iowa, which was his home at the time of his death.

Visitation will be from 9:30- 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at the Wright Christian Reformed Church. A private, family interment in the Wright Christian Reformed Church Cemetery will follow the visitation.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the Wright Christian Reformed Church with Herb Schreur officiating.

Nick Leroy Verbrugge, the son of Heis and Tillie Verbrugge, was born on May 17, 1935 in rural Kanawha, Iowa.  He attended Norway Township country school. Nick was drafted into the United States Army and served from 1957 to 1959.  He earned a mechanical specialty during his Army service.

Nick was united in marriage to Rouletta (Van Pykeren) Verbrugge on June 27, 1958, at the Hull Christian Reformed Church. The couple lived in El Paso, Texas, while Nick was in the service.  They later made their home in rural Kanawha, where he devoted his life to farming and raising their six children.  Nick farmed for over 40 years and drove a school bus for the Kanawha/West Hancock School Districts for 34 years. Nick was also a sales representative for the Garst Seed Company and drove a charter bus for Hawkeye Stages, a bus line out of Fort Dodge, Iowa.  He was committed to his community, serving on the board of Kanawha Christian School and several offices within his church. Nick was a quiet innovator - he holds a patent with the U.S. Patent Office for his shock absorbing transport frame intended to improve the comfort of a patient’s ambulance ride.

Nick would be described by many as a man of deep, Bible-based faith and one who valued his family. He rarely missed a church service or event, even when his health made it difficult. In his free time, he enjoyed going to the events of his children and grandchildren.  Nick loved to travel.  Nick and Rouletta traveled to all 50 states and traveled throughout Europe.

He is survived by five of his six children Paul (Ruth) Verbrugge of Britt, Iowa; Carolyn (Tom) Winegar of Prairie City, Iowa; Joyce (Joe) Morris of Traer, Iowa; Tom Verbrugge of Castle Rock, Colorado; and Mark (Emily) Verbrugge of Waukee, Iowa; daughter-in-law Maria Verbrugge of LeHigh Acres, Florida; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren and 12 step great-grandchildren.  He is survived by siblings Marge Roskamp, Don (Dee) Verbrugge, Ruth (Bob) Eekhoff, and Lois (Roger) Lamfers, brother-in-law Kermit (Kristin) Redenius, brother-in-law Gerrit (Dorothy) Van Pykeren; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Nick was preceded in death by his parents Heis and Tillie Verbrugge, parents-in-law Frank and Lena Van Pykeren, sister Rose Redenius, brother-in-law Bernard Roskamp, his beloved wife, Rouletta Verbrugge, and son David Verbrugge.
