Obituary


DaDean “Dean” F. Obrecht, 83, of Mason City and formerly of Belmond, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Dean Obrecht will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, March 25, 2024 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 1207 3rd Street North East, in Belmond, Iowa.  

Visitation for Dean Obrecht will be held from 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM at the church prior to the funeral Mass.

DaDean Francis Obrecht was born on September 14, 1940 to Edward and Evelyn (Lowenberg) Obrecht in Belmond, Iowa.  He was their eldest child.  

Dean was raised and educated in Belmond, graduating from Belmond High School with the Class of 1958.  He went on to attend and graduate from the University of Iowa, where he was active in music, and played trumpet in the marching band at the 1959 Rose Bowl victory for the Hawkeyes over California.

Dean was the band director at Stanhope, West Branch, Williamsburg and in Illinois, first at Lake Park High School in Roselle and then at Schaumburg, before finishing his working career in human resources with a large furrier operation in Illinois.  Following his retirement, he returned to Belmond, and later to Mason City, where he was most recently a resident at Good Shepherd.

Dean had a lifelong love of music, including a variety of musical styles ranging from Jazz to Frank Sinatra.  He was a longtime season ticket holder at the Minneapolis Symphony.  He also enjoyed bicycling and birding.

Dean was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond.

Dean is survived by his son, Daryn Obrecht of Las Vegas, Nevada; siblings Denise (Keith) Mayer of Osage, Dana (Conda) Obrecht of Des Moines, and DaLon (Sue) Obrecht of Belmond; special friend Judith Oberhauser of St. Paul, Minnesota; uncle and aunt Ray and Millie Lowenberg of Belmond; along with several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents, and an infant brother Gregory Obrecht.
